Water-Quality Standards and Criteria Water-quality standards for streams and coastal waters in Texas have been published by the Texas Water Quality Board (a). These standards consist of three parts: 1. General criteria applicable to all surface waters of the State at . Water-resources data for the water year for Texas are presented in six volumes, and consist of records of stage, discharge, and water quality of streams and canals; stage, contents, and water-quality of lakes and reservoirs; and water levels and water quality of ground-water wells. Volume 4 contains records for water discharge at 61 gaging stations; stage only at 1 gaging station; stage. at 4, feet, the Brazos River in Running Water Draw at about the same elevation, and the Colorado River in Sulfur Draw at about 4, feet. The eight other Texas river basins originate within Texas. The Canadian and the Red Rivers have their outlets, or pour points, beyond Texas. Our remaining 11 river basins spill into the Gulf of Mexico.

The roles of the Texas Clean Rivers Program and the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC) in water quality management and their histories are discussed in this report. Water quality summaries (assessments and methodology) by Texas river basin are also discussed followed by a list of the actual water quality assessments by Texas. The Lavaca River is located on the coastal prairie lying north of the San Antonio-Matagorda bay area. Headwaters originate in southern Fayette County and flow through Lavaca and Jackson Counties into Lavaca Bay. Approximately 60% of the basin is drained by the Navidad River and its tributaries. The basin drainage area is 2, square miles.
